Last week two freak accidents happened in our
municipality involving jeep and tricycle collision and a cargo truck which slid through
the weak shoulders of the National Highway.
One late night of September 12, 2003, a north bound
10 wheeler cargo truck slid on the weak shoulders of the northern approach of the
San Esteban Bridge in barangay San Rafael. This resulted to the damage of the fence
of the house of Mrs. Feliza Ayson Ramirez of the same barangay. No one was reported
injured. According to the driver of the said truck, he disclosed that a bus from the
opposite direction did not dimmed its lights and which he decided to swerved further
right in order to avoid collision but unluckily the rip rapped shoulder gave way resulting
the truck to fall on his side.
The other accident came last September 15, 2003,
when wayward owner type jeep from the south hit a tricycle, full of high school
students. These five students, mostly from Barangay Suso, Sta. Maria, were about to
attend a class in our SE National High School in which they were enrolled. Almost all
passengers of the tricycle including the driver suffered severe injuries resulting to
fractured legs and limbs and head injuries. Fortunately, no one was declared on a
critical condition upon the rescue of our local ambulance of the injured to nearby
hospitals. According to some witnesses, an approaching owner type jeep from the south
trying to avoid potholes along the stretch of the National Highway in barangay San Pablo,
which resulted in ramming an approaching tricycle from the opposite direction. The driver
of the jeep, a resident of San Vicente, Ilocos Sur, related that he loses control, when
his jeep’s front wheel hits potholes.
