“The Use of
WISH and IF”
by Dr. Percival

…the use of infinitive to be is always WERE.
I, he, they, you, she or we with WISH or IF which
are in subjunctive mood, use WERE. “I wish I were,
he wishes he were, they wish they were, I wish uncle
Chuck were with us, If I were, If they were, If he
were.” Even journalists make mistake on this IF and
WISH. Your Uncle Prud was editor of the evening news
and the newspaper evening news was the official
paper for schools. Try to verify this with people
who know their grammar…
